Mandatory Google Accounts For Orkut?

Ramesh Loganathan is reporting that Orkut is making Google accounts mandatory for all new members.

Like the other day I was checking up Orkut, and now they insist that all users MUST have google logins. This made sense If targetted ads is the primary source of revenue, then better "targetting" sure adds more value.

Since I had previously upgraded my Orkut account into "a Googlie one," I some how was left out on receiving the memo. After searching Orkut's help section I came across this.

Please note that each orkut account must be upgraded to a different or new Google Account. It is not possible for multiple orkut users to upgrade to the same Google Account.

This is probably a response to Google's attempt at fighting spam on Orkut. I know Yahoo tried a similar thing with Flickr (and kinda lost) and Google may be doing this to ID would be violators and hopefully appease Brazil as they are currently suing them over criminal activity within the forums.

Update: Added blog link to Ramesh's weblog.

Update (9/21): This is mandatory. Via Orkut Help:

To continue using orkut, you will need to upgrade your orkut login to a Google Account. Please be assured that you will not lose any information in your orkut account.

This should (hopefully) cut down on spam within the scrapbooks and forums.
