I sure hope not, but it seems that some people were very upset about an anti-Shivaji within Orkut, causing some violence within a few areas in India.
(IBN) The Bombay High Court has asked the state government to file its reply in connection with a pleademanding a ban on social networking site, Orkut, for hosting an anti-Shivaji web community. [...]
The community had been blocked by the Pune police after violent incidents were reported in the city when its existence came to light two weeks ago. Though the community is currently inaccessible, the petitioner has demanded that Orkut, which has captured the fancy of many Indians, be banned.
I don't know much about Shivaji, (beyond wikipedia that is) although I do not see the value in banning all of Orkut because of a few opinions amongst the millions who surf the forums.
Orkut has proven itself quite useful as many businesses use it to employ workers, as well as people using it to find the love of their life (congrats!).
Although there are a lot of forums within Orkut that I do not agree with, (especially the anti-American ones) I do not wish for them to be removed simply because I cherish the right for all to express themselves freely without consequence.
Simply banning Orkut would not only encourage members to get around the blocks, but also be a major set back for freedom of expression in the great continent of India.

this is not only about shivaji or some one person . what about i hate india comunity ,=. Its orkut duty when they are informed they should take proactive measures . what about pronographic material??
there is no such community or any pronographic material present on callinglife.com . If they can manage the things in such a wonderful manner why cant orkut
For one I think it is totally stupid to block a site because of the objectional material. Instead you should arrange for it to get shut down.
Banning the site will just let it flourish in the background
i think banning orkut doesnt prevent from such incidents taking place..moreover orkut is a platform where one can b in touch with all their frnds..
As an Indian living in Canada - here is my two cents -
Shivaji is treated like god by the hindu extremists - Shiv Sena. (As an 'Hindu' I never quite got it but whatever)
As anyone with any sense knows - banning a site b/c mentioned problems does not solve anything. Here is why they are doing it:
1) Thats what the politicians do in India to make it seem like they are 'doing something', however, irrelevant.
2) Mumbai is run by Shiv Sena - particularly dominated by those who have nothing else to do but make trouble and hope to go to the good old days...
3) Banning a site like Orkut will help them preserve 'traditional indian values' - whatever they are.
I know it sounds bitter - and maybe I am - but all these things are just done to take attention away from real problems that effect real people.
Sorry for the rant but I had to say something about the nonsense that seems to be going on in my city.
Orkut should have taken then 'report abuse' action seriously
although thousands of Indians reported 'we hate india' as a abuse, orkut didnt took any measures!!
deleting the community after reporting it as abuse by 1000 members or so is a nice way to deal with these kind of issues
These sort of things happen very regularly in our country and we have to deal with this. It's sad but it's true. You may not have heard but just a couple of days ago, that is on the 29th of Nov, rioters burned a complete train, least 50 buses and a whole lot of private cars in just the state of Maharashtra, the idiots were upset because some other idiot in a different state had defaced a statue of a renowned leader-Dr. Babasaheb Amedkar who spread education and awareness in the backward classes of India some 50 years ago. Banning orkut is no solution but to our leaders who want quick and easy fixes it's very attractive. I must say, I admire the freedom of expression Americans have a lot. It's great that Americans get to criticize the president of their country openly and with put any fear...

And apart from that I find many other ways in which Orkut can improve... When Orkut always ask us to 'Stay Beautiful', at the same time it should also work in the direction to maintain that beauty.
As far as 'Ban on Orkut' is concerned, I don't think banning Orkut in India is the proper or the only solution to the thing.
Orkut shall never be banned. Here in India, there has recently been so much discussion on the need for cyber-freedom, especially after the ISPs here banned entire of blogspot since the government wanted to censor two of the pages.
This did not go well, and the government had to recede from its proposal..fresh from this, the government shall never make this stupid step., since Orkut has a huge base in India

no, seriously. what happened to "the biggest democracy in the world"?
what happened to freedom of speech, expression and the right to information? if people want to start hate communities, let them start hate communities! if we have to counter that, we can start a community spreading peace! you cant simply ban the website! by doing so, we negate the entire reason India is a free country! Our govt seems to be like the Chinese. Keeping checks on everything. the govt has to create a ruckus over everything. even a harmless shetty-gere kiss. it's hopeless.
Ban orkut, ban hi5, ban facebook, ban myspaces, ban tagged, ban blogger, ban wordpress, ban google, ban the internet, ban television channels, ban magazines, ban news papers, ban human beings.
Look, its simple man, If its not orkut its going to be another one tomorow... Its foolish to ban a site knowing that there may be another the next day...
there are a billion adult sites around... can someome block all these? even if that happens, people have their own private media... So...

its not goin to work banning orkut there are so many other networking sites which can be targetted by these sick ppl so its better to come up with such solutins which will not allow ppl to post such things on orkut ban or don allow the use of words like anti,hate,destroy etc which violates social terms......wud be better than stopping or banning it
