What's Your Orkut Story?

One of the cool things about Orkut (that is if you live in Brazil or India) is that you can find long lost friends and relatives, and perhaps even strangers of interest.

Oormila Prahlad has posted her Orkut story over on her weblog. Here is a snippet of her post below:

I have suddenly become severely addicted to Orkut. Initially it was a twice-a-day fix but over time, the frequency of my addiction has drastically increased. Now I need it on an hourly basis. It is the natural fallout of being holed at home in a predictable routine with minimal links to the outside world. One discovers a small release that gives a definite high and before long, one is hooked. [...]

16 years back, while in exile in India during the Gulf War, I made it to the finals of the Kerala State Youth Festival Art competition. There, I was introduced to the art prodigy of our generation, Kavitha Balakrishnan. She of course, won first place and I was placed fourth, I think. Over the years, both of us were featured in the media quite often: she was the art prodigy and I was the writing prodigy. Kavitha Balakrishnan and Oormila Vijayakrishnan. Nice alliteration. We never met after that competition. Till two days back. On Orkut.

There are some other funny parts to her Orkut story which made it a great read (hint: read the whole thing). Stories like these are common in the US (well, at least with MySpace anyways) and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar story regarding Orkut?

Hi Darnell. Congradulations for having a blog of note.
I'm from Haiti and I just wanted to say that Orkut is to India or Brazil what Hi5 five is to Haiti, at least for now.

Hi Darnell,

well, apart from getting in touch with many lost friends and ex-batchmates...it helps in other ways too; like me getting a song which I was searching for past 2 years on the net for download. at last, got it by posting my query in a community.

So, I strongly believe in this social networking.

congratulations! Actually came acroos your blog fromt he blogger page :) and already like it.

I am orkut addict. Found a lot of my really old friends on orkut. Had quite an exciting time, but got really hooked into it and was wasting my time too. So yesterday I made a decision not to login to orkut for a week. Haven't yet logged in and already feel like checking your profile :). Let me see how long I can restrain myself from logging into orkut.

Don't know if you have already mentioned it in your blog, but there is agood orkut story I read on one fo the blogs.

Hey everyone, thanks for visiting! I was surprised by the blogs of note thing...I wonder who recommended me?

To Mj: Really? I never new hi5 was popular over in Haiti (although I've had a ton of friends trying to get me to actively engage the site. Perhaps I should check it out more.

To Rupesh: I guess the doubters can never say social networking never works.

To Ks: Yeah, when it gets that addicting, it may be time to stop. Although its always great to revisit back from time to time.

To Oormila: Nice images...I'm going to have to check them out more often. Have you considered joining any artist groups on Orkut?
