I bought my first young coconut ever a few days ago, after having read about them for years.

, and I was disappointed by the small ammount of almost tasteless meat in it, the liquid wasn't that good either, maybe mine was bad.

For the same price $2.50, I could have bought a big bag of dried coconut. But I suppose if you have the money and like young coconuts..

And yes, hitting it on the sidewalk works! and it give the neighbor kids something to gawk at...

My friend has the hfs order her a case every week when they are getting their order for the store, 9/cs. I just picked up 3 of them today since I was driving by that store today, yummy!..

Mmmmm! I love the smell of the liquid, and the light flavor of the meat. And it leaves.

Aftertaste. I have noticed that they differ in how much meat is in them. It seems like the liquid turns to meat as they age. The one I had today was almost all liquid and almost no meat (I had planned to make coconut/pineapple pudding, but there was nothing to make pudding with!) and I've had a couple that had half as much liquid, but the meat was half an inch thick and rubbery (but wonderful as a snack!!).

A few weeks ago, I despaired of ever finding a Thai coconut, so I tried a brown one. It took forever to get a hole in it, and the juice that dribbled out only amounted to a couple of spoonfuls - and it didn't taste right. Then the meat was too hard to get out. I suspect maybe it was.

I get my coconuts from thai markets in Portland $8 for a case of 9. Theyre always awesome! If you have any thai markets around I suggest getting them there. Ow and about the baby thai coconuts, I used to ocasionally come across one when I lived in hawaii theyre so beautiful in the wild, you can just walk up to the tree and pick them off because the tree is so short. The color is amazing on the outside theyre orange with light pink inside. ahhh..

Portland Oregon. I know they have them at foods for less on 82nd, and there are more thai markets on 82nd closer to down town. I live an hour away from portland so it's a lost cause asking me the cross streets. My brother comes in from portland once a week so I just have him pick them up for me. Mashettes work great to open them just hack a triangle shape off the top...
