I would like to know the answer too. Anyone here know what is the answer to that question. I'll do some poking around and get back to you if I find an good answer. You should email the people at Godaddy as they probably can help you..
I'm very aware of that - I just hope the seller isn't..
The only thing effecting this is the fact that is could be 'seasonal' traffic. This means that the person may go out of favour at some point and clearly the name is not as generic as a product - ie, how can you profit from owning geogebush.com (which is not the name by the way.
).
Also, how can you check past OVT scores. How will I know if this traffic is due to this person or if it would be high anyway?.
What price would you pay without even thinking twice for a name with OVT with ext of 19,500?..
Not that seasonal - more like a fashion in sport/music/film etc..
I'd personally pay anywhere from 1 to several thousand but it's hard to speculate without knowing the HostGator name. The best advice I can give you at this stage is not to get your hopes up. The owner is likely to come back with a ridiculously high asking price...
I agree completely and I know they'll be aware of the value..
I just hold out that they may not?!.
There HostGator doesn't resolve - there's nothing on it.
He uses an aol email addy.
In my optimistic sense this tells me that he may not know as much about the name as I do..
I'll post on here what he asks for it when I know so we can see. Recently I've contacted alot of HostGator owners (some for sale and some not openly) and asked for prices. A couple have been ok, but 95% know less than me, but price the name far higher than market value. One stated $200,000 for a name with no traffic and maybe, possibly, maybe in his wildest dreams an end user would come along and pay that, but he's gonna be waiting a long time!!!.
I would have valued his name at $5000 max..
You get a lot of that. They read about the old sales of business.com and the like and say "well business.com sold for $7.5 million and I own businessonline.com so it must be worth at least $3 million"..
Well considering the overture for Jesus with extension is only 1570 it's clear that this person is more famous than Jesus Christ. This means your name is one of the Beatles, since they are the only ones who claimed to be more famous then Jesus Christ..
I have no idea what you should realistically pay because realistically this name should be parked or developed making millions. I'd start low and work your way up. Worst thing that can happen is he gives you a nasty reply which will give you a good feel for what he's expecting. I can't tell you what I'd pay without thinking twice because I always think at least three times...
Good advice! I'll wait and see what he says but the overture score is ridiculous! Could it be an error?.
How do I check what is has been in previous months? Or what other ways of checking the traffic are there other than those I have mentioned..
Also google "first second name" is 833,000.
OVT with ext .net is 234.
.de is available. All other extensions have gone...
It has 19,500 with extension on Overture! I think this is great! Take earthlink.com for example, it has 65101 results with the keyword earthlink.com!..
Did you check OVT a few days ago before the June update?..
I thought it was 15,000 but I can't check now can I?..
Not that I know of. You can't at OVT's GoDaddy site anyway...
To the best of my knowledge, no. That's another one of those areas of research where there is an empty gap and no tool available to fill it with...
What about the accuracy of OVT then..
If you see my point - I don't want to offer a load of cash for a name based PURELY on the OVT result..
I know the 'name' is popular but that's all!.
What else can I do?..
Did you check Wordtracker to see if the stats correlate? Sometime the two don't jive, and that's a give away..
My curiousity is piqued, so I'm going to try something- I'll get back...
Thanks Grrilla - I'm intrigued..
Tried wordtracker and got 38 with extension..
As a comparison earthlink.com gets 501 which is about 13 times as much. But OVT with ext for earthlink.com is 65,000 which is 3 times as much..
Not really sure what wordtracker offers me?.
And still confused as to how reliable the OVT score is for the name. If anyone can think of a way of checking the traffic please let me know! Otherwise I think I'll hold off on the name for the time being?!..
Go here to get a side by side comparison. WT is /da..

From what you are describing, OV is off and should not be trusted. Oh, wait I was thinking that Earthlink= 501 and OV was 65M. Hmm. Still, something feels whacky. Additionally, as a general rule, it is not a good idea to give OV results too much weight in the equation, regardless of accuracy, except w/ no brainer keywords..
Had to go out and didn't get a chance to complete my little experiment, but will get to it, promise...
Update on this thread..
I offered the owner $5k for the name and they were keen but then refused to use escrow as 'it would take too long' and we should do it on trust..
So then I replied that I simply couldn't risk that amout of money with no protection..
The next day I contacted them as offered to broker the name for them as I'd just heard of people who would pay 5 or 6 figures for the name..
They told me that at first I appear to be a private buyer and now come out as a broker - and ended all contact with me!!.
Oh Well..
Latest Overture shows 20,000+ WITH extension.
Wordtracker shows 35 a day..
What should I be feeling? Glad that I didn't risk losing my cash? or Destraught that I could have resold for loads?..
Flip a coin and move on and scout out another deal..
I did a deal on trust for $1500 and it worked out, but I had been in correspondence w/ the buyer for a couple of mos and felt secure w/ who I was dealing with. From what you have said, the party that you were dealing w/ does not exude alot of confidence, so I'm reasonably sure that you made the right move, so probably no need for a coin toss, afterall. This also casts some suspicion on their legitimacy, (or they are suspicious old timers who are just set in their ways):.
On the flip side, the approach you used may have backfired, and injured your credibility. One day they getting a stright up, $5k offer, the next they are hearing that the name is worth $xx,xxx-$xxx,xxx and that instead of buying it out right, you will broker it for them. The broker offer should have come before the cash offer, IMHO...
I find it odd when you say the HostGator has no history on archive.org yet it has a huge OVT score and very good alexa. I would love to know the guys marketing stratedgy if he has done all this in 8 months..
As others have said a name with that kind of score is instant mass traffic worth a small fortune...
Mid to high 5 figures...maybe more if the name is associated with a product/market..
Can't say the name I'm afraid - just in case..
Thanks for the replies though - I agree with them all I think. COuld have struck it rich but I just can't risk $5k.
When I knew this, my only option was to offer to broker the name?!.
I'll post the name one day!!!..
It's much easier to be a spectator, after the fact, and make the calls, than to be in the thick of it when the money is on the line. I didn't mean to be critical in my above post. I think you played it well and made the right choice, and who knows? The owner might have second thoughts about taking a pass and you might be back at this thread telling us about it...
UPDATE:.
Overture WITH extension is:.
7,259..
Dropped massively so maybe missing out was a good thing - although it's still a sizeable figure!!.
Think of the income through selling ringtones and ads etc (he's in the music industry)..
