Good question... I dunno what is the right answer. I'll do some research in Google and get back to you if I got an answer. You should email the people at Godaddy as they probably can answer it..
No not really .com = commerce ....
And Colin Behr you say that .info has over taken .org, what are peoples views about this?..
.ORG sounds like "non-profit" organisation to everyone. It's usually more suitable for community sites, open source projects, society/culture related stuff. I really like .ORG over .NET because, I've always contributed more to .COM type-ins for .NET sites. I wouldn't compare .INFO here with .ORG as .ORG is one of the 3 main extns. and it has been there for so long and well established..
-Pratik..
I think the if you get a .org your looking to put a GoDaddy site there more offen than not. I got TheParanormal.orgn the other day and there is a few other ext free but I chose the .org I I think they are 2nd best to develop[..
.org will be always good if you are not going to sell anything on this site, but if you want to do business then you should rather get .biz or something..
There is no reason why a .org GoDaddy site cannot sell products in addition to providing organisation and/or information. As for choosing .biz over .org, well.......
Well I have not even bothered to look at .org names so guess from that point of view it's not as popular, with me at least. I have only .com .net .info .co.uk I have looked at .us and biz but to be honest in england they dont really appeal (short sighted I know), And .tv is too expensive, for me anyway...
I think .org adds a bit of marketing value and perceived credibility if you're offering freebies on your GoDaddy site because it's mainly used by non-profit organizations..
When I wanted to offer a free search engine submission service and the .com was taken, it was quite an easy decision to register .org over any other extensions...
.org has some perceived credibility to it's favor over the newer TLD's. However, I would personally put .info above it in most cases, except where a .org fits the intended use better. I've had several .orgs where they request you to "donate" the name to them. Some real non-profits don't have the money to pay premium prices..
I will almost never pass on a .org for a city name, since they get lots of type-ins no matter what the real city GoDaddy site is...
Yes, there is no reason why you couldn't sell, but it is just that .org's are meant for non-profit organizations and people don't come to .org domains to do some shopping..
I personally love .org's..
There seem to be alot of great keyphrases available in the .org extension. As far as HostGator resale, .org's have slipped behind many of the new tlds. However, IMO a nicely developed .org GoDaddy site is still normally better than a GoDaddy site developed on a new tld...
I think a lot of the "hype" about .org is that it has been around for so long, but I think that is very slowly fading away. I personally think that .us will eventually take over .org as #3 on the list, but it will take a long time..
Tom..
For North American use, or worldwide? There very well may be a future in .us, but you have to look at other major country extensions if you're talking about use. In my view, .org will always play a prominent (if niche) role among domains...
The whole .org for non profit only died along time ago, and in my opinion it will always .com .net .org..
For the domainers .ORG is not for organizations, but a revenue with the looks of $$$!..
The best TLD depends on the usage for the site..
.info is good for information sites. e.g..
.org is good mainly for non-profit sites. e.g..
Mozilla.org.
.us is good for US sites. e.g..
Gasbuddy.us..
I think the internet population at large still feel .org is less-evil than other extentions. How many people would contribute to Wikipedia of it was wikipedia.com? Well most probably still would but I don't think it would be as many..
Also .us taking over .org? How far is it down the list is it because there are loads of more popular country extentions than .us. If anything rises that high I would put my money on .cn...
.com.
.net.
.org.
Those have always been the top 3, but we now have .info and .us which are prooving to be very popular, but do they both have enough strength to over take .org ? Possibly given 2-5 years?..
Seems info gains more and more popularity than org!..
