New Feature: Add Picasa Album, Blogger To Orkut

(Hat Tip: Rupush and Inside Orkut Brasil)

The boys and girls at Google have created a new feature that allows users to insert their photo albums or weblogs inside their Orkut profiles.

All you need is a site feed and Orkut will display your album/blog for your friends and family to see.

(Orkut Edit Feeds) Want to share your photos from Fotolog, Picasa Web Albums or Flickr? Have a blog on Blogger, WordPress or LiveJournal?

Now, you can add your blog, photos, events, bookmarks and more to your orkut profile. Add the website or RSS/Atom feed address below and orkut will automatically import it and fetch new items.

If you already use Picasa Web Albums or Blogger, Orkut will automatically discover them for you and ask if you want to add these sites to your profile.

To add a site to your Orkut profile simply find out your the site's RSS feed (simply look for the "orange square" in your browser or on the page).

Then right click on the link.

Next, visit your profile page and click on the Edit Feeds button (or click here)...

...and paste the link you copied earlier into the space next to the funky orange square.

Next, click on the add button to the side...

...and type in the correct "word" to pass Google's "are you an evil robot or happy human" test.

Finally, click the "add button" in the lower right hand corner, and if you have proved yourself to be one of the lucky creatures known as human, you and your friends will see your blog/album on your profile page.

If you click on it (say a blog) you will see your posts wrapped in blue.

Great job Google! Now if only we could get RSS feeds for forums inside Orkut, then you would attract more visitors from the US of A (hint, hint!)

A Blogger Widget For Orkut?

No, it's not officially from Google, but it's probably something the Orkut team should consider in the future (that is if Google integrates Blogger, Picasa, etc. within Orkut).

Prashanth has developed a blogger widget that you can add to your blog*spot blog displaying your Orkut profile, scrapbook, teaser, etc., image links, which is similar to what I have on my site.

Since we all love visual explanations, here is a quick way to install this on your site.

Note: This will only work on the new blogger (if you are still using the old or FTP, I would highly recommend switching)

1) You'll need to visit the Tech Banaglore blog and click on the Add Orkut Profile to Your Blog! button.

2) A new page should open up allowing you to select which blog to highlight your Orkut profile on (choose wisely ;-))

3) You may want to consider adding a title to the widget (which will appear on your blog).

4) For non-geeks, this is where things get slightly technical. You are going to have to discover what your Orkut link is in your profile, then paste it into the space provided.

You can usually do this by either right clicking and copying the link location or simply click on your profile link and copy it in the browser bar above.

5) Last but not least, click on the ADD WIDGET button at the bottom.

6) Send Prashanth a quick scrap letting him know that you have added this to your blog sidebar. (optional but I am sure Prashanth will appreciate it).

Note: I will add this under the Orkut User Tools sidebar. Thanks Prashanth!

Update (4/19): Updated blog link to Prashanth's weblog.

Resolving The "404" Domain Issue

I am currently attempting to resolve the domain "404" issue faced with this blog, otherwise known as the weird duality problem.

Inside Orkut may at times disappear from the world wide web, but it should be accessable from either InsideOrkut.com or www.InsideOrkut.com.

Stay tuned...this could get a little rough.

Update (1/16): This is now working. See my personal blog for details.

Google, Blogger And The World Wide Web

I must thank Rupesh for informing me about this.

Apparently it seems that the new Blogger Custom Domains is having some trouble hosting this site.

Ironically for some strange reason Inside Orkut can only publish at www.InsideOrkut.com or http://InsideOrkut.com, but not both.

I've contacted Google about this, and they have already fixed one of my other blogs (Colony Worlds) regarding this problem, but since they are swamped with upgrading the new blogger (as well as fixing the old one), it may be a while before they are able to correct the rest of my sites hosted by Google.

So for now I will be publishing at www.InsideOrkut.com, until they can resolve their server woes.

Note: Is it me, or is the comment system for blogger down?

Update: Comment system seems to be back up. Thanks Google!

InsideOrkut.com Is The New Address...

Wow...that was a very painless process! (well, mostly).

InsideOrkut.com is the new address for this weblog, although Google will redirect it from the blog*spot one fairly soon.

Now all I have to do is update all of the blog directories (plus resubmit a link to Google's server). :-)

You Gotta Love Google...

This post is totally unrelated to Orkut, but nonetheless it does affect this blog site in an indirect-sort-of way.

(Blogger Buzz) The new version of Blogger now supports using a custom domain for serving your blog. If you already own a domain named, say, mysite.com and want your blog to be served at that address instead of at a blogspot.com address, we can host your blog on that domain for you — for free. Your old Blog*Spot address will forward to your new custom domain, so the switch will be seamless for your readers.

Ironically, it was not too long ago that I was considering "going pro" with this blog by having it on its own domain. I've already dabbled with Word Press, Vox and Moveable Type, and with the exception of Vox was not too thrilled over the "overall feel" of the sites.

Vox was great, but you could not host in on your own domain (so that left me at square one) while the Blogger FTP reminded me of the reason why I hated the old Blogger.

Until I can work out all of the bugs on the migration (with this blog as well as others) there will not be any new posts for a day (or two at most).

I will however be checking my email and scrap book, as well as checking out some of those cool forums you guys (and girls) have been sending me. :-)

Customizing Templates? Yeah!

Heh! I recently found Out that I could customize my template's HTML!!!!

I LOVE BLOGGER! Even more than Word Press. :)

Update: Was a blogger glitch. Sigh...
